Mom just had a stroke. What can I do to help her?

My mom is in hospital, she had a stroke two days ago. It has affected her left side of temple, she knows who I am but cannot say my name. What can I do to help her? She cannot say the words she wants to. She says I don't know all the time.

Dear Person B:

Since it is 2 weeks since you wrote me, I suppose the doctors have been able to tell you what the stroke is doing to your mom, tell you the technical name for what is happening, and tell you what the result may be in terms of rehab. I am not a doctor and cannot do that. However, the general name for loss of speech power is aphasia. If it is aphasia, the best video I know of on the subject of what you can do for your mom as her caregiver is a video titled: How to communicate with someone who has Aphasia. It is published by:

Try it out. There is a free 30 day trial period. However, it is expensive. But it is very caring. They have lots of other titles that you may find valuable. Stroke is terrible. But if other people around you are helping you, and you are allowing them to help you. you can make it through. I am glad you reached out to me. That is a sign of inner strength. Please let me know current status of your mom, and any other questions.

Best regards,
Bob

Mr. Schor,

Thank you for your response. My Mother is doing better. Her speech is coming along well. Her speech therapist is very pleased. My Mother is a strong, amazing individual. She has been the best teacher and role model for me.

The one thing I have noticed is her being depressed. I understand this comes with aphasia. She tries to fight it, but once in a while I notice it.

Thank you for your compliment of inner strength. I try so hard to have inner strength. When I am recognized for it, I appreciate it. I know life will bring me lots of tests to bring this out in me.

I hope you are feeling better and best regards to you!!

Sincerely,
Person B
